PC volunteers help children in ‘Walk to School’ event Wednesday morning
Clinton, South Carolina – In collaboration with Clinton Elementary School, a group of Presbyterian College volunteers will be gathering with Clinton Elementary School students for a “Walk to School” event early Wednesday, Nov. 5, and members of the community are welcome to come line Chestnut Street before the CES entrance to support the young students.
The event is planned as part of drug awareness week at the elementary school, and the theme of this part of the program is Stepping Out On Drugs. It’s not only on the dangers of drug use, however, but also the health benefits of walking.
Volunteer college students are working with PC English Professor Justin Brent, who has worked with City of Clinton officials to help improve the walkability of Clinton. This step can help introduce the concept to children and their families.
“Our goal is to get children engaged with the idea of walking to school so that they may feel more comfortable in their community and more open to physical activity outside of the playground,” Brent said.
The group will be meeting between 7:10-7:20 a.m. in the parking lot of the Japan Diner on South Broad Street in Clinton. Volunteers will begin the event with engaging activities and music to get everyone excited for the walk and some will carry signs.
“Once we have everyone we will begin the walk across Pine Street and down Chestnut Street to finally end up at Clinton Elementary for drop off,” Brent said.
This project is designed to help encourage students and parents who live in a safe location to consider walking to school, and children can begin to advocate for their health by getting exercise outside.
