Red Devils outlast Panthers 40-34 in overtime

Clinton RB Javen Cook (3) ran for 215 yards and three touchdowns Friday night against visiting Chapman.
Clinton’s Zy Butler scored on a 10-yard touchdown run in the first overtime against Chapman Friday night at Wilder Stadium, and the Red Devils defense made the score standup in a 40-34 victory over the Panthers.
Chapman erased a 34-21 deficit in the fourth quarter with a pair of touchdown runs – 36 and 7 yards – to tie the game at 34-34 and force the overtime.
Copeland scored three touchdowns on the night and carried the ball 24 times for 161 yards.
But that performance was outdone by Clinton running back Javen Cook, who finished with 215 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries.
Chapman quarterback Bryson Cothran completed 13 of 19 passes for 162 yards and a score, but his final two pass attempts fell incomplete as the Panthers attempted to score in overtime from inside the Clinton 10-yard line.
The Red Devils (2-2) rushed for 379 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown run by quarterback Owen Glenn, who also connected on a 69-yard touchdown pass to P.J. McGowan that handed Clinton a 34-21 lead in the fourth quarter.
The defensive stop by Clinton in overtime was pivotal due to the missed extra-point try following Butler’s go-ahead touchdown.
Chapman fell to 0-4 on the season with the loss.
Clinton will host Daniel next Friday night at Wilder Stadium, while Chapman hosts Christ Church.
