No. 7 Newberry stuns Red Devils, 41-12

Clinton RB Javen Cook (3) breaks through the Newberry defense for a gain Friday night during the Red Devils’ 41-12 loss at Wilder Stadium.
Clinton’s struggles at home against Newberry began almost immediately after kickoff and things never got too much better for the Red Devils in the 41-12 loss Friday night at Wilder Stadium.
The Bulldogs, ranked No. 7 in Class 3A, scored on their first two drives, putting 2A No. 1 Clinton in an early hole.
Newberry left-handed quarterback Kenton Caldwell dominated the game on offense, completing 19 of 22 passes (86%) for 199 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 219 yards and four scores.
The win over Clinton (1-2) snaps a three-game losing streak against the Red Devils for Newberry (3-0). The Bulldogs last defeated Clinton in 2019. Clinton leads the series, which dates back to 1920, 59-36-1.
Senior running back Javen Cook led Clinton with 102 yards rushing, the bulk of which came on a 76-yard dash in the second-quarter that set up a 4-yard touchdown run by quarterback Owen Glenn that cut Newberry’s lead to 20-6.
Cook added a 4-yard touchdown run of his own with 1:07 left in the first half make it 27-12, but that was all the scoring the Red Devils could muster. The Bulldogs scored twice more in the second half to pull away.
Newberry rolled up 525 yards of total offense, and held the Red Devils to 267 yards, including 223 on the ground.
The game was the first of three straight home games for the Red Devils, who will host Chapman next week (Sept. 12) and Daniel on Sept. 19.
