Red Devils explode for 56-22 victory over Cardinals

Clinton RB Javen Cook (3) ran for 122 yards in the Red Devils’ win Friday at Landrum.
Slow starts have become the norm for the Clinton football team, but so have fast finishes.
The Red Devils outscored host Landrum 42-12 over the final three quarters en route to a 56-22 Region 1-2A victory Friday night. With the win, Clinton stays atop the standings in its new Class 2A region.
“It felt like sometimes were were two steps forward and five steps back,” said Clinton head coach Corey Fountain. “But our guys were resilient and we
persevered, and that’s what you have to do. You’ve got to keep moving forward.”
Chris Boyd had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the first quarter and a 27-yard catch from quarterback Tushawan Richardson as the Red Devils (5-2 overall, 2-0 region) began to pull away in the second quarter.
Javen Cook added a 32-yard touchdown run in the second quarter as part of a 122-yard rushing performance.
Freshman Khari Vance ended the scoring for Clinton with a 1-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter, and the two teams played with a running clock for the remainder of the game due to the S.C. High School League’s 40-point mercy rule.
Despite their relative proximity to one another and long histories on the gridiron, Clinton and Landrum (5-2, 1-1) had never met on the football field.
The Red Devils are set to host Blacksburg next Friday for both Homecoming and Senior Night.
