Raiders rebound vs. Dreher; Clinton faces elimination

Laurens pitcher Josh Hughes made his playoff debut with a four-hit shutout vs. Dreher.

Sophomore right-hander Josh Hughes pitched a four-hit shutout Saturday as Laurens defeated visiting Dreher 4-0 in the Upper State Championship baseball tournament.

Hughes walked one and struck out four in the complete game, which eliminated the Blue Devils from the Class 4A playoffs.

The Raiders (16-14) continue in the Upper State round Monday when they travel to Region 2-4A foe Eastside for the third meeting this season between the two teams this season. Eastside defeated A.C. Flora 6-5 Saturday night. Game time for Monday has yet to be announced. LDHS is 0-2 against the Eagles this season.

LDHS bounced back from a Friday night 5-0 loss at A.C. Flora top stop Dreher in the Upper State elimination game.

Freshman Coleman Coker led off the second inning with a hard-hit single for the Raiders and later scored on a two-out infield error by the Blue Devils to put LDHS ahead 1-0. LDHS gave Hughes a cushion with two more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to make the final margin.

Hunter Nabors went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI single in the fourth that scored Jaedon Goodwin. Nabors also reached base on the second-inning error that scored Coker. Bennett Edwards followed with a two-out RBI double in the fourth that scored Nabors.

Thomas Willis reached base on a Dreher error in the fifth and scored on a double by Jackson Martin to extend the Raiders’ lead to 4-0. Both Martin and Jackson were 1-for-3 at the plate.

Dreher starter Shane Keup went the distance for the Blue Devils, allowing four runs – two earned – while striking out nine with no walks.

Chapman sends Red Devils to elimination game

INMAN – Region 3-3A rival Chapman edged visiting Clinton 9-7 Saturday night in the Class 3A Upper State Championship tournament.

With the loss, Clinton will return home Monday for a rematch with Powdersville. The Red Devils beat the Patriots 18-11 Thursday in their opening game of the Upper State round. Monday’s loser will be eliminated from the playoffs.

The Patriots staved off elimination Saturday with a 9-3 win over Seneca, eliminating the Bobcats.

Game time for Monday is expected to be announced Sunday.
