4 seeking vacated county council District 3 seat
The field is set for a special election to fill the unexpired term of former District 3 Laurens County Councilman Garrett McDaniel.
McDaniel, a Democrat, resigned on May 10 to take a position in the administration of President Joe Biden.
Candidate filing closed on Saturday, June 5 with three Democratic hopefuls vying for the seat and one Republican, Scott Tollison.
The trio of Democrats consists of Shirley Clark, William Kilgore, Jr. and Lee McDaniel, younger brother of the former councilman.
The Democrats will be involved in a primary election on Tuesday, July 20, with a runoff if necessary slated for Aug. 3.
Lynne West, Laurens County director of voter registration and elections, said her office hopes to open up absentee voting 30 days prior to the Democratic primary.
West also said COVID-19 protocols have expired, so voters must meet at least one of the 13 requirements mandated by state law to cast an absentee ballot.
Applications for absentee ballots can be generated online at SCVotes.gov or by contacting the county voter registration and elections office at 864-984-4431.
