Mrs. Flora Peek Miller

Mrs. Flora Peek Miller was born in Laurens, South Carolina on August 24, 1930 to Mr. Columbus Peek and Mrs. Arra Lee Madden Peek. She was the widow of the late Lt. James B. Miller.

She attended the public schools of Laurens County. She received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Home Economics from South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She received a Master’s degree from the City of University New York in New York, New York. She also completed additional course work at various colleges and universities throughout her career.

Mrs. Miller was a dedicated educator who touched many lives through her service as a public school teacher. She taught at McCormick High School, Gray Court Owens and Ford Elementary Schools and in Adult Education in Laurens County.

She received numerous awards and recognitions throughout her life to acknowledge her outstanding leadership in education and community service.

Mrs. Miller held memberships in many civic and religious organizations. She was a devoted, loyal and contributing church worker and joined St. Paul Baptist Church at an early age. She was active and participated in several organizations for many years including: Deaconess, The Volunteer Club, The Service Club, President of The Young Women’s Auxiliary, The Missionary Society, The Senior Choir, Chairperson of The Decoration Committee, teacher and secretary of Vacation Bible School, and Chairperson of the Youth Day Program.

Mrs. Miller also extended her Christian service to the Laurens Aid Society- Lodge Number 13, The Newberry Aid Society- Lodge Number 109, and The BTU. She was the past Grand President of the Laurens Aid Society and President of The Laurens Aid Society, Lodge Number 13.

She was a life member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She was a founding member of the Zeta Lambda Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. in Laurens, South Carolina. She served as Basileus, Grammateus and Tamiouchos of the sorority.

Mrs. Miller was also a member of the Laurens Teacher’s Association, the South Carolina National Education Association and the National Education Association. She was a charter member and life member of the Lt. James B. Miller of Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary-Unit 21 in Mullins, SC. This chapter was started in 1955 in memory of her late husband, Lt. James B. Miller.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a niece, Natalie Faye Knight; a nephew, Horace C. Knight, Jr.; a great-nephew Shawn M. Spears; and a brother-in law, Butler J. Pitts, Sr.

On Saturday, November 23, 2019, Mrs. Flora Miller departed this life and entered Eternal Rest at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood, South Carolina.

Mrs. Miller leaves to cherish her memory two devoted sisters: Mrs. Maggie P. Pitts and Mrs. Charlie Mae (Horace, Sr) Knight both of Laurens, S.C.; nephews and nieces: Butler J. Pitts, Jr of Laurens, SC ; Angelia (Henry) Williams of Virginia Beach, VA; Stephen C. (Linda) Pitts, Sr. and Derrell K. (Lois) Pitts of Spartanburg, SC, Dr. Debra G. Knight of Columbia, SC and Valeria A. Knight of Fairfax, VA, great-nephews and great-nieces: Michal (Sharon) Wormley and Shawnda Hinton of Virginia Beach, VA; Stephen C. Pitts, Jr., Brandon J. Pitts and Shameka N. Pitts of Spartanburg, SC, great-great-nephews and -nieces: Amani Hinton, Aniyah Matthews, Summer Spears all of Virginia Beach, VA and Michael J. Wormley and Gabrielle Wormley; sisters-in law: Corine Miller McKeithan of Philadelphia PA; Bettie Miller (James) Jones, Mary Miller Miles, and Virginia Miller Davis all of Marion, SC and Margaret Miller of Sicklerville, NJ; and host of cousins, relatives and special friends.
