Big-play Red Devils run over Eagles, 50-29

Clinton RB Javen Cook (3) ran for 187 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Chesnee Friday night.

Clinton rolled up more than 500 yards on the ground behind three 100-yard rushers Friday night in a 50-29 Region 1-2A victory at Chesnee.

Javen Cook led Clinton with 182 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 15 carries, K.J. Vance ran for 177 yards and two touchdowns on seven attempts, and Angelo Cromer rushed four times for 106 yards and a score.

The Red Devils (5-3 overall, 2-0 region) averaged 15.4 yards per rush attempt.

Clinton led 21-0 before the Eagles (4-3, 1-1) got on the scoreboard with 9:25 left in the second quarter.

Explosive plays in the run game were the difference early as Vance scored on runs of 82 and 58 yards and Cromer put the Red Devils ahead 21-0 with a 74-yard touchdown run.

Chesnee quarterback Evan-Reece Lawter led a Chesnee offense that finished with 479 yards and ran 32 more plays than Clinton (73-41).

Lawter finished with 117 yards rushing and a touchdown to go with 138 yards on 10 of 25 passing. He ran for a touchdown and threw for another to go with one interception by Clinton defensive back Zy Butler.

Clinton, which has now won back-to-back games for the first time this season, returns to Wilder Stadium next Friday night for a region date with Landrum (3-4, 0-1). The Cardinals lost to Blacksburg 14-6 Friday night.
