Althea Jones Burroughs

Simpsonville, South Carolina

Althea Jones Burroughs, age 94, of Simpsonville, was “called home by Jesus” on November 6, 2024, surrounded by her family.

Born in Winnsboro, she was a daughter of the late Robert P. and Malure Price Jones.

Her life was one of prayer, service, and compassion. She was married to the late Rev. Roy Burroughs for sixty-nine years, serving Church of God congregations across SC. She was their teacher, choir director, children’s ministry coordinator, and confidante. A skilled pianist, organist and harpist, she often directed music in worship and was known for her improvisation and arrangements. She taught over 1400 music students in her home. She was a lifeguard and Red Cross Water Safety Instructor for almost 40 years. She won the Community Hero Citation from the National Arthritis Foundation in 1998, having started three water aerobics programs in the Upstate.

She leaves behind children Angie McCarter (Tommy) of Clover, SC; Tim Burroughs (Libby) of Laurens, SC; and Anita Burroughs-Price (Dennis) of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren Jill Hitt (Nathan); Merry Chandler (Walter); Jessie McCall (Christopher), Scott Kelly (Heather), and Christy Kelly; twelve great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

In addition to her husband and parents, Althea was predeceased by one brother and seven sisters.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at Praise Cathedral Church of God,3390 Brushy Creek Rd, Greer, SC 29650. Entombment will follow at Graceland East Memorial Park, 2206 Woodruff Road, Simpsonville, SC 29681.

The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00-1:00 PM prior to the service on Saturday.

Honorary pallbearers will be her former music students and her arthritis classes.
