2nd arrest made in drag strip shooting

Travis D. Turner Jr.

A second suspect has been arrested in connection with a May 11 shooting at Ware Shoals Dragway that left a Greenwood teen dead.

Travis Dewayne Turner Jr. of Greenwood has been charged with murder and the possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Turner was booked into the Laurens County Detention Center Friday and is being held there without bond.

Turner now faces murder charges along with Kendrick Beanard Makins of Greenwood in the shooting death of Calvin Lamont Parker Jr, 17, of Greenwood.

Makins was arrested on May 18 in Abbeville County.

All three were attending the “Best of Both Worlds Car and Bike Show,” which was being held at the dragway on Saturday, May 11. The event featured a car and bike show as well as racing, a flyer on the dragway’s website said. The shooting occurred that evening after 7 p.m.

“Thank God for a safe conclusion to this arrest,” said Laurens County Sheriff Don Reynolds. “I would like to thank SLED and the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office as well as the investigators and deputies of the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office for their dedicated work during the incident and in apprehending this subject. My prayers are with the Parker family.”
