Spartanburg man dies in Clinton crash

A Spartanburg man was killed about 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, in a two-vehicle crash in Clinton.

Laurens County Deputy Corner Ashley Rushton identified the victim as Nicolas Perez Mendez, 54.

According to Rushton, Perez was a passenger in the rear seat of a 2025 Toyota SUV that collided with a box truck at Highway 72 and Charlottes Road in Clinton.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper Brandon Bolt said the Toyota was traveling west on Highway 72 with three occupants while a 2022 International box truck was traveling north on Old Milton Road. The to vehicles entered the intersection at Charlottes Road and collided.

One other occupant of the SUV was injured and transported to an area hospital, and the other was uninjured. The driver of the box truck was not injured, Bolt said.

The accident is still under investigation by the SCHP and the Laurens County Coroner’s Office.
