SCHSL executive committee to consider schedule changes
The South Carolina High School League has called a meeting of its executive committee at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) to discuss extending its fall sports schedule due to the effects of Hurricane Helene across the Upstate.
Athletic directors from several Upstate regions and the executive director of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association have all signed open letters asking the SCHSL to extend the season.
The SCACA asked for a two-week extension to allow schools and communities more time to recover from the devastation of the storm before hosting athletic events.
“This simple adjustment is not just about athletics – it’s about doing what’s right for our students and the people of South Carolina,” SCACA Executive Director Scott Earley wrote. “I urge you to consider this appeal with the utmost empathy and concern for those who are already bearing the weight of immense adversity.”
Meanwhile, Laurens District High School announced on its social media pages Monday that it plans on resuming its football schedule Friday night against Southside at K.C. Hanna Stadium. The game is also to be the Raiders’ third try for a Homecoming game. Two previous attempts did not work out due to schedule changes associated with Hurricane Helene.
The Raiders are also planning to play volleyball matches and to host a competitive cheer competition.
The Georgia High School Association voted this past week to extend the football schedule by a week, while South Carolina athletic directors and the SCACA are asking to extend all fall sports schedules. The GHSA is to announce other fall sports schedule changes this week, reports said.
An announcement from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association about scheduling changes is expected Wednesday.
“Our thoughts and prayers continue for our membership in Western North Carolina. We appreciate the consideration and compassion being shown to them,” NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker told Highschoolot.com.
