Clinton cooks Liberty behind Cook’s 4 TDs

Clinton senior running back Javen Cook ran for four touchdowns and 132 yards to lead a dominant rushing attack in a 49-6 Homecoming victory over Liberty at Wilder Stadium.
For the second straight year, Clinton won the battle between Red Devils. This time, Clinton averaged 14.5 yards per rush attempt, rolling up 435 yards on the ground and 509 yards in total offense.
Cook and Angelo Cromer gained more than 100 yards rushing with Cromer gaining 121 yards with a touchdown on five carries.
A 20-yard touchdown run by Cook put Clinton ahead 7-0 with 5:12 left in the first quarter. Liberty answered wtih a 13-yard pass from Crhis Mable to Conner Hood to cut the lead to 7-6 after a missed extra-point try with 11:52 left in the second quarter.
Cook added touchdown runs of 41 and 5 yards before halftime as Clinton stretched the lead to 21-6 at the break.
The Clinton defense held Liberty to 125 yards rushing and picked off quarterback Caleb Pilgrim twice.
With the win, Clinton – ranked No. 3 in Class 2A – improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in Region 1-2A. Liberty fell to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in region play.
Clinton travels to Chesnee (4-2, 1-0) next week, while Liberty has an open week.
