Edward Ingram Burwell

Dateline – Jefferson, Georgia

Evans Funeral Home of Jefferson announces the death of Mr. Edward Ingram Burwell, age 85, of Jefferson, Georgia, who passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Burwell was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, a son to the late Mrs. Virginia Findley Burwell and the late Edward W. Burwell. Mr. Burwell was a veteran of the United States Army, a brilliant man and one of many talents. As a young man, he was a radio disc jockey in Washington, DC, and a news writer for Peter Jennings in New York. Later, he became a local news anchor in New Bern, North Carolina. He went to school to learn how to be a farrier (blacksmith) and parlayed that into a career training and driving standardbred racehorses.

In the last 20 years he was a food and beverage director for golf clubs in both Michigan and South Carolina and at assisted living facilities in South Carolina as well. At the age of 80 he passed the physical test required to become a corrections officer with the state prison system of South Carolina, where he instructed female prisoners to plan and prepare meals. One of his last dreams was to own a food truck. He never stopped dreaming and never stopped striving to reach his dreams. He was an adoring father and grandfather, but most of all he was a devoted and loving husband to his beautiful wife, Dorothy, for more than 60 years. He was funny, kind, and thoughtful, and would likely be cracking some kind of joke to lighten the mood right now. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Goldman Burwell of Jefferson; daughter, Gaye Burwell Orr and her husband Edwin of Raleigh, NC; daughter, Lillian “Lynn” Mulvey and her husband Shawn of Jefferson; son, John Daniel “Dan” Burwell and his wife Nanette of Pittston, PA; brother, Jon Burwell of Pawleys Island, SC; grandchildren, Lillianna Mulvey, Victoria Mulvey, Noah Mulvey and his fiancée, Grace Callow, Taylor Burwell and her fiancé, Keoni Johnson, Dylan Burwell; and a great grandchild, Eden Reese Mulvey also survives.

In accordance with Mr. Burwell’s wishes, his remains were cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date by his family. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Standardbred Retirement Foundation: https://www.adoptahorse.org/memorial-commemorative
