Walt Todd Jr. wins 5th county amateur title

Laurens County Amateur champion Walt Todd Jr. eyes a putt on the par-5 18th hole Sunday just before it drops in the cup for an eagle at Lakeside Country Club.

By the time Walt Todd, Jr arrived at No. 18 at Lakeside Country Club Sunday afternoon, about the only thing that had any chance to catch up to him in the Laurens County Amateur golf championship was the heat.

Todd had a six-stroke lead over his father, Walter Todd, Sr., and led by double digits over the closest non-Todd, defending champion Mattie Wiggins.

After Todd, Sr. rolled a putt to within inches of the cup on the par-5 18th and tapped in for birdie, the younger Todd rolled in a 25-foot putt from the fringe for eagle to finish claim his fifth county amateur title with a 66-67-133.

“I just tried to get one on the green and get it rolling, and it just came out perfect,” said Todd, Jr., who set him self up for eagle with a 194-yard approach over water to the back left of the final hole.

While Sunday’s finish couldn’t have been much better for Todd, Jr., the start wasn’t so bad either. He started the day with a two-stroke lead over Todd, Sr. (68-72-140), and three strokes over their playing partner, Nick Howell (69-77-146).

By the time he reached the back nine Sunday, the championship was all but settled.

Todd, Sr. finished with an even-par 72 thanks to the birdie on No. 18, and Howell followed up Saturday’s 3-under-par 69 with a 77, allowing Wiggins to slip past him for third.

But two quick birdies over the first four holes expanded his lead and carried the momentum from a strong back nine that Todd, Jr. turned in Saturday during the first round of the 36-hole tournament.

“I started out kind of slow (Saturday), but a made a couple of putts on 10 and 11, and that kind of set the tone for the weekend,” Todd, Jr. said. “I tried to hit as many fairways as I could and get myself in position.”

The tournament was flighted after the opening round. Tyler Croxton shot a 77-75-152 to edge Jon Coleman (79-75-154) by two strokes. In the senior division, Ron Schroder fired 69-71-140 to finish 4-under and nine strokes ahead of runner-up Jimmy Garrett (73-76-149).
