Driver dies in single-vehicle crash near Ware Shoals

The driver of a pickup truck was killed in a single-vehicle crash near Ware Shoals Saturday evening.

The wreck occurred around 7:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 25 at Highway 252, about two miles north of Ware Shoals.

The victim has been identified by the Laurens County Coroner’s Office as Lukas Michael Welsch, 29, of Ware Shoals.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper Gary Miller, Welsch, the driver of a 1997 heavy duty Dodge Ram pickup, was killed at the exit ramp for Highway 252 when he ran off the right side of the road, up an embankment and crashed into a stand of trees. Welsch was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. There were no passengers in the truck.

The traffic fatality was the second of the weekend in Laurens County. A 58-year-old Columbus, North Carolina man was killed in a single-vehicle wreck Friday on I-26. It is also the fourth such fatality over the past two weekends in the county.
