Snow, ice expected as winter storm approaches area

National Weather Service Graphic

Upstate residents are bracing for a mix of wintry weather this weekend that could deliver 2-to-4 inches of snow and ice accumulations to Laurens County.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for this weekend as a storm system carrying with it the possibilities of snow, sleet and/or freezing rain to the Upstate.

The storm is expected to develop across the Upstate late Saturday and hit Saturday night and into Sunday.

“A major winter storm is expected to hit the area. The latest trends have cut down snow totals over portions of the NC/SC Piedmont, The NWS posted on its Facebook page for the region. “This also means more ice in areas expecting less snow. Please continue to monitor the forecast as the event gets closer.”

Freezing rain is expected for the Lakelands and lower Piedmont (i.e. Laurens County).

The precipitation is expected to taper off Sunday afternoon and evening, but black ice could provide problems on the roads and highways early next week.

Area residents are urged to stay abreast of weather reports from the NWS and local media.

In sports, Presbyterian’s men’s basketball game at Hampton scheduled for Saturday has already been postponed.
