Raiders rebound with 27-17 win at North Augusta

Jayden McGowan (3) was among four Raiders who found the end zone for Laurens Friday night in a 27-17 win at North Augusta.

Laurens picked up a much-needed victory at North August Friday night in the Raiders’ final non-region contest before the Region 2-4A schedule begins next Friday night (Oct. 1).

LDHS topped the host Yellowjackets 27-17 behind a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns that sealed the victory. The Raiders, who scheduled the trip to North Augusta after a previous scheduled contest against Daniel was canceled due to COVID-19, never trailed against the Yellowjackets.

Raiders WR/DB Michael Mankake, a transfer from Minnesota who has committed to Clemson as a preferred walk-on, scored his touchdown with the Raiders on a flea-flicker from Jay Pulley to put the Raiders ahead 20-10. Junior DB Jaedon Goodwin intercepted an Austin Harrell pass and returned it for a touchdown to give the Raiders a 27-10 cushion.

Gemire Darden started the scoring for LDHS with a 9-yard run that was set up by a Jayden McGowan blocked punt recovered at the Yellowjackets 9-yard-line. McGowan, a Vanderbilt commit, later added a touchdown of his own on a pass from James Rawl.

McGowan finished with 76 yards on four receptions and 55 yards rushing on six carries – both yardage numbers were game highs.

The Raiders (2-3) are to begin their Region 2-4A schedule next Friday (Oct. 1) when they host rival Greenwood for Homecoming.

Homecoming festivities are also scheduled to begin with a Homecoming Parade on Monday beginning at 6:30 p.m. The parade route will follow the usual downtown Laurens parade route but will do so backwards, beginning at the intersection of East and West Laurens streets and North Carolina Street. From there, the parade will go through the Courthouse Square and down West Main Street. It will end at the intersection of West Main and Pinehaven streets.
