Clarendon leaves LA in dust after first quarter

Laurens Academy got off to the faster start the Crusaders coaches had been looking for, but LA was unable to keep up with Clarendon Hall Friday night in Summerton.

Clarendon Hall exploded for an 82-14 win over the Crusaders (0-3).

LA got both of its touchdowns in the first quarter, but were unable to sustain that offensive output.

Buddy Baker returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown to get the Crusaders on the scoreboard, and quarterback Garrentt Murphy connected with Diamonte Grant on a 2-point conversion pass. Murphy added a 2-yard touchdown run for the remaining LA points.

“I was very pleased in our 1st quarter performance and getting off to a better start then we have in the first three games,” said LA Assistant Head Coach Travis Plowden. ” Things slid away in the second quarter, and I wish I had done a better job of responding to the momentum change.  I give a lot of credit to Clarendon they did a number of things to give us problems and have some really good players.  Although the game quickly got out of hand, we played hard and competed.”

LA head coach Todd Kirk, who was out a week earlier due to COVID-19 protocols, missed a second straight game.

The Crusaders are scheduled to host Cathedral next Friday (Sept. 17) at Todd Kirk Field.
