Maggie P. Pitts

Dateline – Greer, South Carolina

Mrs. Maggie P. Pitts was born in Laurens, South Carolina on August 20, 1927 to Mr. Columbus Peek and Mrs. Arra Lee Madden Peek. She was the widow of the late Mr. Butler J. Pitts, Sr.

She attended the public schools of Laurens County. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in English from South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She completed several hours toward her Ph.D. at Columbia University in New York City, New York. She also completed additional course work at various colleges and universities throughout her career.

Mrs. Pitts was a dedicated educator who touched many lives through her service as a public school teacher. She taught in the following school districts: Greenwood County School District 52 (Ninety Six Schools), Greenwood County School District 50, Laurens County School District 55, Laurens County School District 56 (Clinton Elementary School and Martha Dendy School), and McCormick County School District. She also taught Adult Education in Laurens County for over ten years.

She received numerous awards and recognitions throughout her life to acknowledge her outstanding leadership in education and community service.

Mrs. Pitts held membership in many civic and religious organizations. She was a devoted, loyal and contributing church worker and joined St. Paul Baptist Church at an early age. She was active and participated in several organizations for many years including: Deaconess Board (President), Church Secretary, The Volunteer Club (Secretary and Treasurer), The Service Club, The Young Women’s Auxiliary, The Missionary Society, The Senior Choir, The Daily Education Bible School (Teacher), Sunday School (Teacher), and Vacation Bible School (Teacher).

Mrs. Pitts also extended her Christian service to the Laurens Aid Society- Lodge Number 13, President, The Newberry Aid Society- Lodge Number 109, and The BTU.

She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She was a founding member of the Zeta Lambda Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. in Laurens, South Carolina. She served as Basileus and Grammateus of the sorority.

Mrs. Pitts was also a member the Laurens Teacher’s Association, the South Carolina National Education Association and the National Educational Association.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Flora Peek Miller.

On Tuesday, June 1, 2021, Mrs. Maggie P. Pitts departed this life and entered Eternal rest at the Greer Health and Rehabilitation Center in Greer, South Carolina at the age of ninety-three.

Mrs. Pitts leaves to cherish her memory three devoted sons: Butler J. Pitts, Jr of Laurens, SC; Stephen C. Pitts, Sr. (Linda) and Derrell K. Pitts (Lois) of Spartanburg, SC; a devoted sister, Mrs. Charlie Mae Knight (Horace, Sr.) of Laurens; beloved grandchildren, Michael Wormley (Sharon) of Charlotte, NC; Stephen C. Pitts, Jr, Brandon J. Pitts, and Shameka N. Pitts all of Spartanburg, SC, Rhonda Lindsay, Sonya Lindsay, and Simmund Lindsay; great-grandchildren, Michael J. Wormley, Gabrielle Wormley, and PFC Marvin D. Lindsay; nieces: Angelia M. Williams (Henry) of Virginia Beach, VA; Dr. Debra G. Knight of Lexington, SC; and Valeria A. Knight of Fairfax, Virginia; great-niece Shawnda D. Hinton of Virginia Beach, VA and a host of other relatives and special friends.
