LA heads to playoffs following 60-0 rout

Laurens Academy scored its third blowout victory in a row Friday night with a 60-0 thumping of a combined Palmetto Christian-Cambridge Academy team at Todd Kirk Field in SCISA 8-man football.

With the victory, the Crusaders (7-3 overall, 3-2 conference) earned a first-round home playoff game and will face Patrick Henry next Friday night.

LA also honored its nine seniors in its Senior Night ceremonies as its defense turned in its third consecutive shutout.

Senior quarterback Thomas Lowry rushed for four touchdowns on runs of 45, 40, 24 and 45 yards in the first half as LA sprinted to a 46-0 lead by halftime. Running back Clarence Bertoli also added a first-quarter touchdown to start the scoring for LA.

Cal Robertson hauled in a 28-yard touchdown pass from Lowry just before halftime. Robertson had five catches for 71 yards.

With most of LA’s offensive starters sitting out the second half, 8th-grader Brett Young scored his first touchdown of the season with a 43-yard run, and Judson Watkins added a 17-yard run for a score.

LA rides a four-game winning streak into the SCISA Class A playoffs and has outscored its last three opponents by a combined 154-0.
