Gray Court emergency alert siren inoperable

Gray Court’s emergency alert system is down and Mayor Stellartean Jones is urging residents to pay extra attention to broadcast an online weather reports in case violent storms come to the area.

The siren that blares loudly, alerting local residents to tornadoes or other dangerous weather systems stopped working, Jones said.

“It’s a very old system. It’s at least 40 years old and finding parts for it may be difficult,” Jones said.

If parts for the old system cannot be found, the town may be faced with purchasing and installing a new emergency alert system.

Work on the broken system and siren could take 6-10 weeks before it is repaired due to work delays caused by the COVID-19, she said.
