Laurens District High School is looking for a new girls basketball coach following the resignation of Yoneko Allen.
Allen, an acclaimed player for the Raiders, returned to her alma mater and took over as head coach, but the team never enjoyed the success it did when Allen was in uniform herself.
“We’re taking applications, and we’ll be scheduling interviews – virtually – in the next couple of weeks,” said LDHS Athletic Director Tommy Spires.
Allen, who urged her players to be involved in the community beyond basketball, will remain at LDHS as a guidance counselor, and Spires said she will continue to be involved in athletics in some fashion.
LDHS went 4-16 this past season and were 2-12 in Region 1-5A. Over the past four seasons under Allen, the Raiders were 21-49 overall.
The job opening was posted on the LDHS website a little more than a week ago, and the South Carolina High School League was to post the opening on Monday.
“We already have 22 applicants in a little over a week, so we’ll start going over those,” Spires said.
LDHS will move to Class 4A next season thanks to realignment from the SCHSL. The Raiders are to join Greenwood, Greenville, Eastside and Greer in Region 2-4A for all sports during the 2020-21 academic year.
