Motorcylist perishes in Waterloo crash

A motorcyclist was killed early Monday afternoon when he struck a tractor-trailer while traveling on Highway 221 in Waterloo.

Michaeel Thomas Wessell, 28, of Greenwood died at the scene of the accident around 12:30 p.m.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper First Class Tyler Tidwell, Wessel was traveling north on Highway 221 near Harris Springs Road on his 2018 Harley-Davidson motorcycle when he collided with the tractor-trailer.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 2011 Freightliner, was traveling south on Highway 221 and completing a left turn when Wessel collided with the trailer near the rear axle.

Tidwell said Wessel was not wearing a helmet. No other injuries were reported. The accident is still under investigation by the SCHP.

According to Wessel’s Facebook page, he had been employed as an automotive technician at Smith Chevrolet in Laurens since 2014.

Wessel is the third motorcyclist to die in accidents in Laurens County over the past two weeks. Two Waterloo residents, Tony Hall and April Lewis, were killed when the motorcycle they were riding was struck by a vehicle in Laurens on Saturday, Sept. 14.
