I have so many fond memories of Robert. I regret that I did not learn of the seriousness of his illness until the day of his death. I recall the Sunday when Robert first visited Waterloo United Methodist Church. His story was fascinating to me. He had resigned from a job with the FBI in Washington, DC because he was unhappy with his FBI job and living in the D.C. area. It was around 1967 or 68 when he moved with his family to Waterloo and Lake Greenwood . . . determined to start his own business. I was one of his first business partners. I think I was 16 years old at the time. Robert proposed that we go into the garbage disposal business. I agreed. He furnished the truck and paid the vehicle expenses and I drove the truck and picked up the garbage. Those were the days when most folks used 55-gallon barrels for their backyard trash and garbage. We split the revenue 50/50. The business grew and I soon had to hire help from my earnings. We picked up garbage in Waterloo, Cross Hill, and all around Lake Greenwood. By the time I left Waterloo to go to college, we had so many customers that we had to begin the garbage pickup around 5 a.m. on Saturday and I did not return home until after 6 p.m. I was with Robert when he bought his first dump truck and I worked with Robert as he expanded into landscaping. I spent many hours visiting with Robert and other locals at his Handyman’s store in Waterloo. As an adult, I spent several evenings sitting on one of the rocks surrounding the campfire site he created across the road from his store. He created the site just for friends to join him in sitting around the evening campfire and sharing stories. Robert was a successful businessman and a good human being. He was a creative person. On one of my last visits to Waterloo, Robert gave me a golf cart tour of a small scale “Disney like” park he had created in the woods behind his house to entertain grandchildren and other local children.

I am saddened to learn of Robert’s death. My thoughts and prayers are with Gail, Gil, Tammie and all the other members of his family.

I just learned of Mr. Henderson’s passing today 8-10-19. I am sorry. He was a great person. Good to us through the many many years of a shed rental. He will be missed. God bless you all.
