Enoch Newton “Sonny” McCarter, III

Enoch Newton “Sonny” McCarter, III, age 77, of 372 Vern Cora Road, and husband of Edna Marie Cox McCarter, passed away on Friday, January 25, 2019, at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community.

Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Enoch Newton McCarter, Jr. and Mary Belle Murdock McCarter. Enoch grew up in Honea Path and enjoyed playing high school and college football. He was a teacher and coach at Ford School and retired from Laurens District 55 High School. Mr. McCarter was an active member and former deacon of Hillcrest Baptist Church for more than 50 years and was a dedicated member of Gideon International. Being an outdoorsman, he enjoyed gardening and farming. Together with his wife, they operated McCarter’s Nursery and Garden Center for 30 years. Enoch always had a positive outlook on life, loved to read, and enjoyed poetry.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Janice Bishop and husband Marcus of Ware Shoals, Lisa Crisp and husband Mickey of Laurens, and Beth McCarter of Laurens; sister, Dianne McCarter Garren and husband Jerry of Trenton, NC; four granddaughters, Jill Hart and husband Shane, Julie Madden and husband Ricky, Abigail Crisp, and Ansley Crisp; seven great-grandchildren, Cassie, Ethan, Brayden, Brynley, Bella, Bailey, and Brycelyn; and one nephew, Hunt Garren and wife Julie.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 27, 2019, at Hillcrest Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Marcus Bishop and Rev. Scott Brewington.  Burial will follow in Mt. Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Honea Path.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The Kennedy Mortuary from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2019.
