Clinton routs Powdersville; Laurens, LA both fall

The Clinton Red Devils’ football team picked up its first victory of the season Friday night, a victory that turned out to be the only one for the area varsity teams who were in action.

Clinton’s Greg Sanders rushed for two touchdowns, Konnor Richardson threw three completions – two for touchdowns – that covered 113 yards, and the Red Devils routed host Powdersville, 47-0. Clinton is now 1-2.

Clinton’s rushing defense was dominant against Powdersville, holding the Patriots to minus-19 yards on 26 rushes. The Patriots also turned the ball over four times, leading to three touchdowns – including a 44-yard fumble return by Sam Tiller.

Laurens, meanwhile, held a slim 17-14 lead on Hillcrest at half before the Rams posted four touchdowns in the second half to pull out a 42-24 victory at K.C. Hanna Stadium. Laurens is now 1-2 as it enters Region 1-5A play next week against Wade Hampton.

Duane Martin rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown for the Raiders, but former Raider Deonte’ Smith caught a 63-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Will Watts with 8 minutes, 45 seconds left in regulation to put the Rams ahead for keeps.

Laurens Academy, which went on the road to face St. John’s Christian, was on the short end of a 66-12 loss that dropped the Crusaders’ record to 0-3.

Clinton hosts Wren next Friday, while LA welcomes W.W. King as it opens region play on the same night.
