Laurens, Clinton football suffer rough losses

Both the Laurens Raiders and Clinton Red Devils had a tough go of things Friday night, and each ended up on the wrong end of a one-sided result.

Myrtle Beach attacked Laurens’ defense all night and pulled away to a 42-6 victory over the Raiders at K.C. Hanna Stadium. The loss moved Laurens’ record to 1-1 on the young season.

Laurens’ lone touchdown came at the end of the third quarter when Ryan Campbell hit Duane Martin for a 75-yard catch-and-run score.

Myrtle Beach’s Jermani Green rushed for 117 yards and three touchdowns, while quarterback Luke Doty threw for 279 yards and three touchdowns as the Seahawks more than doubled Laurens’ total offense (443 to 213).

Clinton went on the road Friday to take on Broome, and the Centurions handed the Red Devils a 42-7 loss. Titus Hood scored a 5-yard touchdown to account for Clinton’s only score, while Broome’s Keyvon Graham rushed for 83 yards and scored three total touchdowns.

Laurens (1-1) wraps non-region play next Friday when it hosts Hillcrest, while Clinton (0-2) visits Powdersville.

Laurens Academy was at home for the first time this season on Friday, and its luck was no better than that of the Raiders and Red Devils, with the Crusaders falling 58-0 to Beaufort Academy. LA is now 0-2.

Quarterback Thomas Lowry had 109 yards passing and 83 yards rushing for the Crusaders in the loss. He also threw one interception.

LA visits St. John’s Academy this Friday.
