Todd edged out in Senior Am tournament

Laurens golfer Walter Todd advanced to the second round of the United States Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship, in Eugene, Ore., before being eliminated Tuesday by Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C., 1-up.

Todd, who advanced to the second round with a 6 and 5 victory Monday over Dennis Smith of Layfayette, La., was 3-down with eight holes to go before winning No. 12 and 16 (with a pair and birdie, respectively) to get back into the match. Todd then birdied the 17th hole to even the match, but when he bogeyed the final hole and Simson carded a par, Todd was eliminated.

Todd was seeded 41st in the tournament, while Simson is seeded ninth. Smith, the player Todd defeated in the first round, was seeded 24th.
