Clinton boys capture region title
The Clinton Red Devils boys’ basketball team won the Region 3-3A title Tuesday night after a 56-53 victory over Woodruff.
The victory moved Clinton to 17-3 overall and 9-0 in region play. Clinton takes on Chapman in the regular-season finale Wednesday night before opening state tournament play on Tuesday. And, with the Region 3-3A title, Clinton will host a first-round game, and potentially a second-round game if it advances.
Clinton outscored Woodruff 19-11 in the third quarter to erase a slim three-point halftime deficit, then held on despite shooting 3 of 10 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.
Kiah Young and Zay Hurley each had 14 points to lead Clinton, while Jalen Carter had 13 points and Tymori Tribble scored 10 points.
Clinton’s girls lost to Woodruff in their game, 46-42. Savanna Campbell had 15 points.
Laurens: The Laurens girls were eliminated from state tournament contention with a 77-69 loss to Hillcrest Tuesday. The Raiders trailed by as many as 21 points in the third quarter before storing back to within four in the game’s final 17 seconds. Tieisha Jones led Laurens with 19 points.
Laurens’ boys also wound up on the short end against the host Rams, who scored 48 points in the first half and rolled to an 80-47 victory. Josh Greene led Laurens with 15 points.
PC: Rebecca Walker scored 12 points and Taylor Petty added 11 as the Blue Hose women’s basketball team knocked off UNC Asheville Tuesday, 52-47. Presbyterian is now 8-14 overall, 6-5 in the Big South.
PC hosts Liberty Saturday.
