Clinton tennis ousts Woodruff, reaches semis

The Clinton Red Devils girls’ tennis team is one victory away from a return to the state championship round.

Clinton advanced to the SCHSL Class 3A semifinals with a 4-2 victory Wednesday night against visiting Woodruff. The victory marked the third this season for the Red Devils against their Region 3-3A rivals.

Gracie Waldron (No. 1 singles), Elizabeth Jones (No. 2) and Gerri Hill (No. 5) all won their singles matches to put Clinton on the brink of advancing, but it wasn’t until Mary Katherine Kelly’s victory at No. 3 singles that the Red Devils had the fourth point to clinch the victory.

Clinton (16-3) will visit Mid-Carolina in Monday’s semifinal. Mid-Carolina, the regular-season champion in Region 3-3A, eliminated Chapman in their quarterfinal match. Clinton lost both prior meetings this season.
