Clinton boys advance to quarterfinals

The Clinton boys’ basketball team advanced to the state quarterfinals of the SCHSL Class 3A Tournament Friday night, using a 10-1 run to pull away from Pendleton to grab a 53-42 victory at Clinton High.

Jalen Carter had 13 points and Zay Hurley added 12 points, for Clinton. Hurley and Vilo Boyd each had two baskets during the game-breaking run that turned a 32-29 lead late in the third quarter into a 42-30 lead that Pendleton could never make up.

Clinton advanced to Tuesday’s quarterfinal game against Berea, which upset Chester in triple overtime, 84-82. The result means Clinton will host Berea at 7 p.m.

LA: Laurens Academy’s girls’ opened the SCISA Class A Tournament with a blowout of Mead Hall, 68-23. Ruthie Moore led all scorers with 35 points.

Laurens Academy advanced to play in Monday’s quarterfinal against St. John’s Christian or Beaufort Academy. The game will be played at Wilson Hall, starting at 5:30 p.m.
